Volunteering. It’s #GoodForYou.

Volunteering’s not just about giving back – it goes both ways. It improves your wellbeing, gives you skills for the future, and helps you make new friends (and memories).

What Can I do for Scouting,

You might join us because you want to :

  • Try something new
  • Make friends
  • Spend time with their children or gain experience with young people
  • Do something good for their community and themselves
  • Keep their bodies and brains active and happy whether that's by scaling mountains, sharing skills or serving tea.

You end up making a huge difference to young people's lives gifting them with skills for life, and learning a whole lot about yourself along the way.

Whether you want to work with young people directly or help behind the scenes, there's something for everyone at Scouts.

We currently have vacancies and opportunities for :-

Management Team members, Group Leader Roles and Parent Helpers as well as Supporters and Trustees

Are You a Team player? Love supporting young people? Great at planning?

Most of our volunteers work directly with young people aged 6-18 through our Squirrels, BeaverCubScout and Explorer groups, known as sections helping young people gain skills for life through activities and adventures.

Working in teams, you might:

  • Welcome young people and families to sessions and events
  • Make sure everyone's safe, supported, included and having fun
  • Help to plan and lead activities
  • Get involved with days out, camps and expeditions
  • Share and learn skills from coding to cake decorating to canoeing
  • Celebrate young people's achievements big and small

No previous experience working with young people? No problem. Whether you'd like to help out week after week or whenever you can, we provide training, learning opportunities and cups of tea every step of the way.

What our Volunteers say
Chris,
Section Leader
Being a volunteer has changed me quite drastically. I never thought I'd be able to lead children in activities. I didn't have the capability or confidence. Now I do.
Andrew,
Section Leader
If it wasn’t for Scouts, I think I'd have been spiralling down throughout this pandemic. I’ve made so many friends it’s unbelievable
Barbara,
Assistant Section Leader
I'm teaching my child things I value and that other children and other parents value as well, it's brought out something I never knew I had

What to make a big impact behind the scenes :

Your time and skills can make a difference in so many ways.

Not all volunteers work directly with young people. Locally, regionally and nationally, many help out in other ways.

Working in teams, you might:
  • Get the best out of volunteers, using their people and leadership skills
  • Spread the word about Scouts to attract new members
  • Help with admin, fundraising, finances, operations or governance
  • Keep everything running smoothly on the ground from serving tea and coffee, helping to tidy up after meetings or sessions, driving or keeping meeting places in tip top conditions

Not sure how you'd like to help yet, or how much time you have to give? No worries. Contact our recruitment team volunteer@sunderlandscouts.org.uk and have a chat, we can look with you through a whole host of options including flexible and occasional volunteering.

I'm convinced what do I need to? - If you'd like to volunteer just email volunteer@sunderlandscouts.org.uk and one of our recruitment team well be in touch!
